After the abolition of the energy price cap, prices will rise significantly.
Changes Due to the Energy Price Cap in 2024
From 2024, households in the Netherlands will have to pay the full energy price. Additionally, there is an increase in energy taxes, which came into effect on January 1, 2023. The Homeowners Association (Vereniging Eigen Huis) has announced that in the new year (2024), taxes on energy bills will increase by 226% for households with average energy consumption.
Last year, VAT was temporarily reduced from 21% to 9% to assist homeowners with high energy costs. This reduction has now ended, in addition to the previously mentioned increase in energy tax.
Taxes remain high and continue to increase.
Taxes will remain high in the coming years. Thanks to the energy price cap in 2023, the impact on households will be manageable and foreseeable. This is because all rates for electricity and gas, up to the consumption cap, are still inclusive of VAT and energy taxes.
If you exceed the energy price cap, you will not only pay higher delivery rates but also a higher energy tax. More on this later.
At the end of 2023, the energy price cap will end. The price per liter of gasoline is determined on average by 43% in excise duties. For energy bills, it is not much different. In addition to the monthly energy tax, 21% VAT is levied. In 2023, households received compensation through the introduction of the energy price cap.
The expectation now is that the energy price cap will end at the end of 2023. If this happens, the Homeowners Association believes that everyone will really feel it. This could even lead to a tax increase of 528 euros compared to 2022, assuming energy consumption remains the same.
The government aims for households to pay around 70 cents in energy tax and VAT for one cubic meter of gas starting January 1, 2024. This is almost double the base gas price, which fluctuates between 30 and 40 cents on the Amsterdam gas exchange.
Will we soon be literally and figuratively left out in the cold?
Significant Increases and Decreasing Rates
Starting January 1, 2024, the energy tax (EB) for gas will increase by a staggering 19%. For electricity, it will decrease slightly from about 15 to 13 cents per kWh. It is clear that the government is actively trying to reduce gas consumption by continuously increasing the energy tax for gas.
For the year 2024, the energy tax is particularly high, as shown in the overview of recent years (EB per cubic meter, including VAT):
- 2020: 49 euro cents
- 2021: 51 euro cents
- 2022: 54 euro cents
- 2023: 57 euro cents
- 2024: 70 euro cents
By making gas usage increasingly expensive, the government encourages households to further reduce their gas consumption. For example, there are subsidies for insulation and (unfortunately only) for heat pumps.
Save on Your Energy Bill
Some people can avoid part of the increase in their energy bills by taking energy-saving measures in time. This includes installing infrared panels on the ceiling or walls.
For everyone who has not done so, it will certainly be noticeable that prices are going to rise significantly.
Avoid unpleasant surprises on your energy bill by taking action now. Implement energy-saving measures, such as installing infrared panels on the ceiling or walls.
